Here's a cartoon from the August 30, 1873 issue of Harper's Weekly suggesting that Ladies get their own Regatta:
The caption reads, '"Why Not?" Why can't the Ladies belonging to the various Colleges have a Regatta of their own next year? Let the First Prize be a Husband with a Fortune and we think the Winning Boat will make the Quickest Time on Record.'
And only an older schoolmarm could lend the proper authority as a coxswain, right?
